“These times will try hard to define me
And I’ll try to hold my head up high
But I’ve seen despair here from the inside
And it’s got a one-track mind
From “These Times” by Safety Suit
The Typescript seeks to publish poetry and short fiction that engages with “these times.” The call is international, though writers may want to focus on issues that affect their local communities. People around the world live in increasingly precarious times. Climate change, environmental crisis, politics leveraged for power and profit, mass shootings, family separation, the dehumanization of asylum seekers, and growing forms of inequality shape the global landscape.
What is hope in these times? Where might we find it? What is meaningful action? How might we achieve it? How can we stop “these times” from defining us as people in despair?
Send your poems and/or short fiction—or cross-genre explorations—to theresa.smalec@TheTypescript.com.
We aim to respond to writers within two weeks of their submission. This is an ongoing call, although submissions sent by September 30th 2019 are encouraged.
