Between

Drop the door
key in the dark

fumble
about the porch

in a silent
anxiety

to get in
the house

a cold
December night

Leaving New York
six weeks before

afraid I’ll drop
the car keys

down the rain
sewer grate on

Queens Boulevard
and then

so help me
closing the trunk

of our Dodge Dart
I drop the keys

Fishing with a coat
hanger all

Sunday
afternoon

finally
hooking

them up
out of the leaves

Back at the farm
two a.m.

standing in
the mudroom

wondering
what does it mean

this going and
coming

without a sure
way in

Being Me – Six Propositions

What I would do
if I were

you before
I did anything

else would not
be me

*

If I were
you you
wouldn’t be

you you’d
be me
too

*

You wouldn’t be
satisfied
being me
I mean I’m
not

*

Listen
I was here
first

how
did you
get in

*

One of us
has to go

and it’s not
going to

be me
you say

*

There must be
some way

we can
both

be happy
being me
