I would like to start out being the first to point out the apparent glaring hypocrisy of me writing an article telling someone that because of their past that they are no longer welcomed at the table of political and cultural thought. For the majority of my life I was a fundamentalist Southern Baptist who advocated through social media, and via my vote, against a woman’s right to bodily autonomy, against any form of legislation that gave the LGBTQIA+ community equal standings in America because “they were an abomination” in the eyes of God, and finally because I considered Black Lives Matter a racist organization.

All of those are ignorant, racist and bigoted positions. All of which that I have, thankfully, evolved from. So, the question then becomes, why am I taking the stance that recent Trump defectors are no longer welcome in polite society, and do not deserve an off ramp from the disaster highway that they built? The answer is quite simple. I have evolved, many like me have evolved. We admitted our wrongs and our sins, and we have dedicated our lives to healing and reversing the damage that our tweets, statuses and votes have caused. The average Trump supporter has not and does not want to. What they want is a quite escape from the president who has taken what they believed in private and made it way too public.

Most Trump supporters are not ashamed that our president has locked children in cages. They are not upset that 7 children have died in ICE custody in concentration camps because our government, in video taped sworn testimony, argued that medical care and sanitary living conditions are not basic human rights. They have no empathy for the people, and place no blame on our border policies, as children drown in their parents arms crossing the Rio Grande They don’t blame the president for that, they blame the migrant parents for not staying in their homelands and getting help from the local government, many of which our government installed and who work hand in hand with sex and drug trafficking kingpins. In other words, it is their government and sex and drug traffickers and the violence they beget that the migrants are fleeing.

They are not ashamed, nor are they disappointed, when our president, in a racial tirade, tells the so-called Squad (comprised of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota) to go back to their own countries to fix the problems there. The thing is, Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley, and Tlaib are all American-born, and Omar has lived in the US since she was 10. Apparently, the only real American are those of white skin according to our President and his supporters.

His supporters cheer as his economic policies reward the top 1% of the 1% with the fruits of the labor of the poor. His supporters cheer as he spits in the face of what it means to be a conservative and interferes with California’s right to regulate carbon emissions and gas mileage in cars. They cheer as he rolls back the LGBTQIA+ rights gained less than a decade ago. They cheer as he threatens to pay off the deficits of his tax plans by cutting Medicare and Social Security. They cheer as they affirm their beliefs that the poor, the brown, the gay, and the Muslim are why they cannot get a job that pays a living wage.

They do not want to renounce the bigotry that Trump has popularized. They do not want to renounce racism. They do not want to admit that black men die because they are black in police custody. They do not want commit to equality for all, they want to maintain privilege for the few, the proud, the white. They do not want to evolve and change, they want to cling to their guns and their bible and everyone else be damned. They are so committed to keeping others down, they reject the progressive policies that keep them from moving up the social ladder as long as it keeps others from advancing in society as well.

So, to that I say, “Sorry Trump supporters, you’re no longer welcome at the table of political and cultural discourse.” You do not deserve a spot at the table that shapes our countries future. You have done enough damage, and until you are willing to admit that you are wrong and that you must evolve for the betterment of humanity you should be silenced.

I have seen the damage that my vote and voice have done to the non-white, the non-Christian, and the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as women. Allowing those anti-equality sentiments to slip silently back into the shadows where they can metastasize and remerge during our next financial crisis would only further damage my friends in those communities in the future. If I am personally, if we are personally, committed to ending racism and bigotry then we cannot allow racist and bigots to continue to shape our culture and political system.

This was personally a difficult article to write; I live in a very red-state and I am related too, and friends with, many people that proudly wear a MAGA hat with a Trump 2020 shirt. Many of them would give their shirt off their back to anyone in need even if they were non-white, non-Christian and LGBQIA+. Despite this they still support ideals and policies that oppress those people, and that can no longer be tolerated in civil society.
